CHALLENGE

During the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of small merchants in the Dominican Republic, especially corner-store and cafeteria owners, were drastically affected. These businesses, essential to the neighborhood economy and to everyday community life, faced challenges of sustainability, operations and adaptation to new biosafety, digitalization and financial management demands.

PROPOSED
SOLUTION

The Coca-Cola System in the Dominican Republic —made up of The Coca-Cola Company and its bottling partner Bepensa Dominicana— in alliance with the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs (MICM), launched the "Emprendamos Juntos con Coca-Cola" program.

The program sets out to strengthen the capabilities of small merchants through a comprehensive training plan covering topics such as: management of corner stores and cafeterias, financial health, marketing and promotion development, hygiene and biosafety, and digital skills.

The program has also had the support of educational and social institutions such as PUCMM, INTEC, Fundación Banco Adopem and Junior Achievement Dominicana, which have been key to developing and implementing the content.

RESULTS

Scalability: thanks to the program's success in the Dominican Republic, Emprendamos Juntos con Coca-Cola is being replicated in more than 20 countries across the Caribbean.

The program has been an example of successful public-private collaboration, under President Luis Abinader's vision of economic and social wellbeing. The Coca-Cola System, together with the MICM and allied academic and social organizations, has created a high-impact synergy that has made it possible to train and support the entrepreneurs closest to their communities.
